Radiant Sleek 18K gold bangle — hallmarked fine jewellery by Atelier by Jain Gold

How to Care for Your 18K Gold Jewellery

Jun 22

18K gold is one of the most durable materials used in fine jewellery. With minimal care, a well-made 18K piece will look exactly the same in twenty years as it does today. Here is what that care looks like in practice.

Daily Habits That Make the Biggest Difference

Put your jewellery on last when getting dressed — after perfume, hairspray, and lotion. Chemicals in these products build up on gold surfaces and dull the finish over time. Perfume in particular should never be sprayed directly onto jewellery.

Take jewellery off before swimming, whether in a pool, the sea, or a hot tub. Chlorine and salt water both attack gold alloys and can loosen stone settings over time.

Cleaning: What Works, What Does Not

For routine cleaning, warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristle toothbrush is all you need. Scrub gently, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Do this once every two weeks if you wear your pieces daily.

Do not use toothpaste to clean gold — it is abrasive and will micro-scratch the surface. Do not use bleach or strong household cleaners. For pieces with enamel, skip the brush and use only a soft cloth.

Ultrasonic cleaners are safe for plain 18K gold and diamond-set pieces, but should be avoided for enamel, pearls, and pieces with prong settings that may have loosened with wear.

Storage

Store each piece separately — gold is soft enough that pieces stored together will scratch each other. The pouches your Atelier by Jain Gold pieces arrive in are ideal for individual storage. A jewellery box with individual compartments works well for everyday organisation.

Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, both of which can affect certain finishes and stone settings over time.

When to See a Jeweller

Check stone settings every six months by gently pressing each stone with a fingertip — if it moves, the setting needs attention before the stone is lost. Bring in any piece with a damaged clasp, a bent prong, or a chain that has developed a tight knot it cannot be worked free of.

With basic care, your 18K gold jewellery is built to last a lifetime. The investment is in the piece — the maintenance is ten minutes a month.
